Happy Canyon Awards Scholarships
PENDLETON,OR- The Happy Canyon Foundation has awarded five Pendleton High School seniors with $750 scholarships. They are Travis Koeller, Emily Matlock, Katherine O' Grady, Sally Stuvland, and Chase Taylor, all of Pendleton.
“The Happy Canyon Foundation awards five scholarships each year to students who are participants in Happy Canyon and those who help us as volunteers,” said Kevin Hale, scholarship chairman. “These young people give us hope for the future. They are exceptional young adults and we wish them luck as they further their education.”
Koeller is the son of Larry and Susan Koeller. He has a 3.5 grade point average at Pendleton High School and plans on attending Blue Mountain Community College where he wants to study agriculture business. He has volunteered for Happy Canyon for six years as a member of the cavalry and the quadrille in Happy Canyon.
Matlock is the daughter of Jack and Annette Matlock. She has a 4.0 GPA and plans on studying art and music at Albertson College of Idaho. She has volunteered for Happy Canyon since 1989, acting in the show and selling programs and bottled water.
O'Grady is the daughter of Ray and Julie O'Grady. She has a 4.0 GPA and plans on majoring in music performance at Pacific Lutheran University and pursue a career as an opera singer. She has worked as an usher at Happy Canyon since she was in sixth grade.
Stuvland is the daughter of David and Susie Stuvland. She has a 3.47 GPA and plans on attending Western Oregon University where she will major in elementary education and minor in child development. She has been a cast member of Happy Canyon for 17 years and has volunteered in numerous other capacities.
Taylor is the son of William and Tina Taylor. He has a 2.77 GPA and plans on enrolling in the farrier science program at Walla Walla Community College. He has volunteered for Happy Canyon for four years, participating in the rescue, cavalry, bank robbery and quadrille, and also helping with scene changes.
Happy Canyon Co., Inc. is a non-profit community corporation governed by a 12-member board of directors. Hundreds of volunteers produce the annual Happy Canyon Night Show each evening after the Pendleton Round-Up. The Night Show is held in the 4,230 seat Happy Canyon Arena. After the Night Show each evening, Happy Canyon also hosts dancing and social gaming in the Pendleton Convention Center facility. Happy Canyon Co., Inc. also, in conjunction with the Pendleton Round-up Association produces a public concert each year on the Saturday of the week before the Round-up and hosts two nights of professional bull riding competition on the Monday and Tuesday of the Round-Up Week. Both the concert and bull-riding events are held in the Happy Canyon Arena.
