Round-Up names Nekraszewicz Volunteer of the Year
2008 Volunteer of the Year, Russ Nekraszewicz holds open the Round-Up shuttle door for Judy LeGore.
The Pendleton Round-Up board of directors has named Russ Nekraszewicz the recipient of the Orville Gerberding Volunteer of the Year award for 2007. The award was presented Saturday at the annual Barbecue Helper’s Party in the Let ‘er Buck room.
Nekraszewicz was selected by the Round-Up board for his many years of running the Round-Up’s courtesy van service.
Butch Thurman, president of the Round-Up Association, says Nekraszewicz is very deserving of this award.
“Russ does an outstanding job of managing the courtesy vans for us," Thurman said. "He works from seven in the morning until midnight during Round-Up. He puts in a ton of hours. This is going to be his last year of handling that job. Whoever takes his place is going to have some big shoes to fill."
Nekraszewicz is a past Round-Up director, and has been a volunteer for 26 years.
The Round-Up Volunteer of the Year award is given in memory of the late Orville Gerberding, a Round-Up volunteer and past Round-Up director. The award has been recognition of Round-Up volunteerism since 1999. Past winners include Rory Neault, Dr. Donald Smith, Bill Dawson, Joe Zyph, Fred Thompson, Betty Byer, Leon Laucirica, and Gary Tague.
Thurman pointed out that the Gerberding award is named as such for a reason.
"Orville was an excellent example of what our volunteers are all about,” Thurman said. “He was always there to help out. He once said that our volunteers knew more about their job than the directors did. He's probably right."
