Thurman Presides over Round-Up Again in 2008

PENDLETON, Ore. – Butch Thurman was re-elected president of the Pendleton Round-Up at the annual stockholder’s meeting held Tuesday night November 27th at the Let’er Buck Room at the Round-Up grounds. Kevin Hudson was elected vice-president.

In his president’s message, Thurman reported that he felt the Round-Up was a success again this year, even with ticket sales flat across the board. Thurman said that the Board of Directors did a superior job of staying within their budgets, and he complimented several sub-committees for their hard work this year. Thurman cited the Long Range Planning Committee for their efforts in preparing for the stadium expansion project. “This committee has put in a lot of work,” Thurman said. “They have helped to get us on a path that we hope will make the stadium plan a reality.”

Thurman noted that the 100th Anniversary Committee and the Logo Committee put in countless hours this year.

Thurman also complimented the board for completion of the Roy Raley Room, and the expansion of the Let’er Buck Room.

“I want to thank all of the volunteers and those businesses that donated labor towards the sponsor building. We greatly appreciate their dedication to the Round-Up.” After looking over the 2007 financial report, Thurman said,

"We were able to undertake $350,000 of needed capital improvements and still end the year with an increase in net assests $20,122. I congratulate and thank our directors, volunteers and sponsors." Thurman highlighted the other events that the Round-Up Association and the Happy Canyon Company staged this year did very well.

"The PBR was sold out on both days for the first time ever," he said. “And the concert was also sold out. Both events continue to be very popular.” Thurman closed by thanking the volunteers for their continued hard work, which makes the Round-Up so special.

“It’s really a pleasure being a part of the greatest rodeo in the world, and the volunteers continue to work tirelessly year after year to make the Round-Up just that.” New Directors

Jim Ward, Duane Degrofft, and Dr. George Nelson retired from the board at the conclusion of last night’s meeting. The stockholder’s approved the board’s nomination of three new directors. Tygh Campbell, who will take over as Hay and Barns director, John Trumbo, as Security director, and Troy LeGore, taking over as Office and Souvenirs director, in addition to being named Secretary/Treasurer of the board.

Thurman then informed the stockholder’s of director assignments for the coming year: Randy Severe, Livestock; Paul Green, Concessions; Campbell, Hay and Barns; Bill Quesenberry, grounds; LeGore, Office/Administration/Souvenirs; Kevin Hudson, Room 17 & Medical; Joe Talbot, Arena; Ron Pahl, Indians; Dennis Hunt, Competitive Events; Billy Lorenzen, Parade; Trumbo, Security, Larry Williams, Queen and Court, Carl Peterson, Programs and Ushers, Billy Morrison, Let’er Buck Room, Tim Hawkins, Sponsors.

Appreciation awards were handed out to Chris Grimes, Stuart Roberts, and Bob Walchli.

25-year service awards were given to Brian Fritz – Let ‘er Buck Room, Gary Graham –Beer/Concessions, Ivan Meads – Competitive Events, Larry Pearson – Medical, Tom Snyder – Arena, Don Key – Security, Kenneth Yokom – Parade, John Tillman – Security, Penny Johnson – Publicity, Kristi Jenness – Ushers & Programs, and Stacy Fujiwara – Ushers & Programs.

The Round-Up board of directors leaves Monday, December third, to attend the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association annual Convention and National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Several of the directors will be attending Wednesday’s annual PRCA Awards Banquet, which will be held at the South Point Hotel and Casino. The Pendleton Round-Up is nominated again as the 2007 Large Outdoor Rodeo Committee of the Year.

The Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon is held the second full week of September in Pendleton, Ore. The Round-Up began in 1910 and is recognized as one of the oldest and most prestigious rodeos in the world and won the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s 2003 Large Outdoor Rodeo Committee of the Year Award. The Happy Canyon Night Show is a colorful display of Indian pageantry and tradition and takes place every night of Round-Up. A week full of activities, including parades, concerts, PBR bull-riding competition, barbecues, dances, gambling and numerous other events begin Saturday, Sept. 6 and continue through Saturday, Sept. 13.
