Happy Canyon Foundation Awards Scholarships

PENDLETON,OR- The Happy Canyon Foundation has awarded six $750 scholarships to area members of the class of 2007.

Receiving the scholarships are Wendy Baker of Weston-McEwen High School; Zack Blanc, Bobby Corey, Sam Lorenzen and Jake Van Cleave of Pendleton High School; and Demee Williams of Griswold High School.

Baker is the daughter of Tom and Pattie Baker of Adams. She has a 4.02 grade point average. She plans on attending Oregon State University and transferring to the University of Southern California to study architecture.

She's been associated with Happy Canyon for 13 years, assisting her father in loading and putting back fire arms used in the production.

Blanc is the son of David Blanc and Shawna Rew-Blanc of Pendleton. He has a 4.02 GPA. Blanc will attend Whitman College in Walla Walla. He wants to go on to law school, and practice law in Colorado.

He's been involved in Happy Canyon, appearing as Swim Kid, China Man, Street Walker and Emigrant in the production.

Corey is the son of Doug and Heather Corey of Adams. He has a 3.75 GPA and plans to attend the University of Idaho, where he'll major in agricultural business and play football. After graduating, he plans to return to Pendleton to pursue a career in agriculture or appraisal.

He's been involved in Happy Canyon for 13 years, appearing in a wide variety of scenes and helping with the U.S. Bank/PBR Classic.

Lorenzen is the son of Larry and Liz Lorenzen of Pendleton. He has a 3.88 GPA. He's been accepted at Oregon State, Colorado State and Kansas State universities. When he chooses his college, he plans on majoring in agriculture business.

He's been involved in Happy Canyon for 17 years and a cast member for more than 10 years.

Van Cleave is the son of Leroy and Bridget Van Cleave of Pendleton. He has a 3.70 GPA. At the time of his application he listed Linn-Benton Community College, Linfield College and Montana State University as his choices for higher education. He plans to major in communications, art or business.

He said he's participated in Happy Canyon since birth, as his mother would bring him in during the emigrant scene. He moved on to the street scene after 14 years, where he and Bobby Corey perform the photographer act.

Williams is the daughter of Jim and Leslie Williams of Helix. She has a 4.0 GPA. She plans on attending Washington State University where she'll major in pre-medicine. She plans to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology.

She has participated in the Happy Canyon production as an extra since birth.

Happy Canyon Co., Inc. is a non-profit community corporation governed by a 12-member board of directors. Hundreds of volunteers produce the annual Happy Canyon Night Show each evening after the Pendleton Round-Up. The Night Show is held in the 4,230 seat Happy Canyon Arena. After the Night Show each evening, Happy Canyon also hosts dancing and social gaming in the Pendleton Convention Center facility. Happy Canyon Co., Inc. also, in conjunction with the Pendleton Round-up Association produces a public concert each year on the Saturday of the week before the Round-up and hosts two nights of professional bull riding competition on the Monday and Tuesday of the Round-Up Week. Both the concert and bull-riding events are held in the Happy Canyon Arena.
