Pendleton, Oregon (Wed., Sept. 12)--Jess Davis was a standout as the famous Pendleton Round-Up rodeo began its 97th annual four-day run today. Davis , 26, of Payson , Utah captured first place in bareback riding, one of eight professional rodeo events held at the Round-Up, which finishes on Saturday.

Held annually the second week of September, the traditional rodeo and accompanying festival attract some 50,000 visitors to the town of 17,000 in Oregon ’s eastern wheat and cattle country.

Davis ’ 83 points bested Cleve Schmidt by a single point. Schmidt, of Belle Fourche , South Dakota , tied with Cimmaron Gerke of Brighton , Colorado . Davis is currently second in the ProRodeo Cowboys World standings, with over $80,000 in winnings this year at bareback, while Gerke is 10th. Schmidt is ranked 18th.

Davis, who joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) in 2001, has steadily climbed in the rankings and placed in five of 10 rounds in last year’s Wrangler NFR.

“I feel pretty darn good,” Davis said after his win. “I’ve always wanted to win this rodeo and hopefully I can make it into the short round and do good on Saturday. This rodeo’s been around forever and I really like it.” Of his horse, Black Gold, Davis said, “he was a younger horse and didn’t really know what to do. Tried to buck me off, you know! I’ve seen him this year in a couple of rodeos and he just kind of fit my style.”

Of the legendary Pendleton Round-Up he noted, “A lot of the guys I’ve looked up to have rode here and won the rodeo. And a lot of the books I’ve read have talked about the big rodeo they’ve had forever here and all and I really like the situation all around.”

In calf roping Jerome Schneeberger, Ponca City , Oklahoma took first with a time of 11.8 seconds, besting Blair Burk, Durant , Oklahoma , with 12.2, and Trevor Brazile, Decatur , Texas , with 13.5. The 31-year-old Schneeberger, with over $1.2 million in winnings in his career, was the college calf roping champion in 1996, the year he joined the PRCA. Brazile is currently the world leader in the event and was 2006 World Champion All-Around Cowboy.

Top place in the saddle bronc riding event was a tie, with both Brad Rudolph, Winterset, Iowa, and Heith DeMoss, Crowville, Louisiana, awarded 85 points, followed by Bobby Griswold, Geary, Oklahoma, with 84. Local favorite, Pendleton homeboy Ben Londo, was one back with 83, tying Justin Arnold of Santa Margarita , California . Arnold is 10th in the world standings.

Another Pendleton competitor, Justin Pearce, took second in the steer wrestling event with a time of 9.2 seconds, well behind a phenomenal 6.1 finish by Stan Branco, Chowchilla , California . In third was Hunter Cure, Holliday , Texas , who currently stands 23 in the world rankings for the event, with over $40,000 in winnings for the year.

In the rodeo’s only team event Brian Griffith, Hughson , California , and Clint Cooper, Decatur , Texas , captured first in team roping with an outstanding five second finish. They were followed by Clint Gorrell, Beach, North Dakota , and Colt Gorrell, Winneth, Montana , 6.0 seconds, and Patrick Smith, Midland , Texas , and Trevor Brazile, Decatur , Texas , 6.1. In the event, Brazile is ranked seventh in the world with over $56,000 in 2007 winnings.

Bullriders take a lot of bumps and today’s competitors found no exception, with several riders hitting the Round-Up’s fabled grass arena as if it were hard clay. Clint Craig, Mena , Arizona , captured first with an 87 point ride on aptly named Perfect Poison. Craig is 15th in world standings with over $62,000 won this year. Tied for second were Jesse Bail, Camp Crook, South Dakota, and Ted Bert, Modesto, California, both with 85, riding War Zone and North Star respectively. Bert is seventh in the world, with nearly $80,000 in winnings, while Bail sits at 23rd with just over $43,000. In fourth place was Jed Moore, Cheyenne , Wyoming , with 81.

Troy Tillard, Douglas , Wyoming , was first in steer roping with a time of 13 seconds, followed by brother, Tim, also of Douglas , with 18.4 for fifth place. In second was Rich Skelton, Llano, Texas , 14.9, followed by Cash Myers, Athens , Texas , 15. Myers and Skelton are 17 and 21 in the event’s world rankings.

In the Round-Up’s only women’s event, barrel racing, the finishes were close, although Oregonians were fastest, as first went to Lucy Schnabele, Prineville, Oregon, with a time of 28.46 seconds, followed at 28.58 by Cindy Woods, Newberg, Oregon, and Tammy Key-Fischer, 28.61, Ledbetter, Texas.
