Rodeo Results for Thursday, September 13

Pendleton, Oregon, Thursday, September 13, 2007, The rodeo court jumped the fence and raced their horses across the arena in the daily ritual that lights up the crowd at the Pendleton Round-Up, as one of America’s legendary rodeos began the second day of competition in its 97th annual rendition.

Topping the field in that most typical of rodeo events, saddle bronc riding, Dustin Flundra, Pincher Creek, Alberta, rode Shallow Water to a first place 83 point ride. Because the horse’s performance matches the rider’s in points earned, Flundra noted the quality of the horse under him.

“I’ve seen him quite a few times this year but that’s the first time I’ve been on him myself,” said the 26-year-old Canadian, currently ranked 21 in the ProRodeo Cowboy World Standings, with over $41,000 in 2007 earnings. “He’s been good all year so I was excited when I got to him.”

Referring to his experience at the Pendleton Round-Up, Flundra said, “There’s not very many places where a guy goes that are still out on the grass and the wood chutes and the crowd’s just here to have a good time and they get behind everyone. I had a good day. I just love comin’ to this rodeo.”

Right behind Flundra, with 82 points, was Jesse Kruse, Great Falls, Montana, while tied for third with 80 were Taos Muncy, Corona, New Mexico, and Shawn Morehead, Bruneau, Idaho. Muncy is ranked second in the world standings this year, with nearly $100,000 in earnings for staying on his bronc.

In the bareback event Scott Montague, Rapid City, South Dakota, took first with a score of 85, followed by Steven Dent, Mullen, Nebraska, 82, and Silas Richards, San Augustine, Texas, 80. The three are also close in this year’s world standings for bareback, with Montague at 14th with nearly $60,000 in earnings, while Dent is 11th with $62,000 and Richards is 22nd with $34,000. The 31-year-old Montague finished 17th in the world standings last year.

Local favorite Jeff Coelho, Echo, Oregon, just down the road from Pendleton, took first in calf roping with 9.8 seconds, followed by another Oregonian, Shane Erickson, Terrebonne, 11.8, and in third, Sam Levine, Wolf Creek, Montana 12.4.

Casey McMillen, Craig, Colorado, won first in steer wrestling with an amazing 4.1 second performance. He was followed by Dru Melvin, Tryon, Nebraska, 6.8, and Todd Suhn, North Platte, Nebraska, 7.1. Nationally this year they’re ranked differently in the event, with Suhn in 5th with over $71,000 in winnings, followed by McMillen at 7th and $66,000 and Melvin at 44th and $24,000. The 34-year-old Suhn had his best year in 2004, when he finished 4th in the world standings with $143,000 in winnings. In 1996 he won the steer wrestling and all-around titles at the Round-Up, two years after he joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).

In rodeo’s only team sport, two cowboys from the Pacific Northwest, Mike Fuller, Clarkston, Washington, and Shane Crossley, Hermiston, Oregon, tied for first with two other local favorites, Blake and Butch Knowles, Heppner, Oregon, all with an enviable time of 6.4 seconds in the team roping event. In third were Charly Crawford, Prineville, Oregon, and Cody Hintz, Spring Creek, Nevada, with 6.5. Crawford is the 24th ranked header in the national standings with $36,000 in winnings in 2007, while Hintz is 26th among heelers, also with $36,000.

In steer roping top honors went to another Northwest cowboy, Jason Stewart, Royal City, Washington, with a time of 11.5 seconds. Following him was J.D. Yates, Pueblo, Colorado, 12.7, and local cowboy, Paul Rice, Jr., Pendleton, 15.0. In the national rankings J.D. Yates is 11th, with $20,000 in 2007 winnings. At 15 the 47-year-old Yates became the youngest ever to qualify for the NFR, an event he won in 2002.

In the rodeo’s only women’s event, barrel racing, Vickie Solmosen, Riverton, Utah, topped the field of 11 finishers with a time of 28.87 seconds, followed closely by Kali Parker, Wendel, Idaho, 28.89. In third was Abby Davis, Adrian, Oregon, 29.16. The 52-year-old Solmosen, who joined the PRCA only in 2005 and has competed in an amazing 20 plus rodeos, is ranked 5th nationally this year with $66,000 in winnings, her best pace by far.

In what some consider the most fearsome rodeo event, bullriding, Clint Craig continued his winning grip, taking first place for the Round-Up’s second day, with an identical score of 87, tying Jarrod Craig, Hillsboro, Texas. Also tied, for third, were Zack Oakes, Tonasket, Washington, and Bobby Welsh, Gillette, Wyoming, at 86. Two top finishers on Wednesday, Jesse Bail, Camp Crook, South Dakota, and Ted Bert, Modesto, California, tied for 5th Thursday with an 85. Many of the Round-Up competitors in bullriding are nationally ranked, including Wesley Silcox, who finished in a three-way tie for 10th today but is nationally 3rd with winnings of $106,000 so far in 2007. Others are Clint Craig, 15th, Jarrod Craig, 8th, Bail, 23rd, and Bert, 7th. Marcus Michaelis and J.C. Bean, who tied Silcox today at 10th, are 12th, and 46th respectively in the national rankings.
