Rodeo Results for Friday, September 14

In a banner year for him, young Kanin Asay captures another bullriding win, as the Pendleton Round-Up moves into its final day

Pendleton, Oregon (Friday, September 14, 2007) Kanin Asay, Powell, Wyoming, set an outstanding mark on the third day of the 97th Pendleton Round-Up. The 21-year-old Asay, the 2004 high school bullriding champ in his home state, rode Okie Dokie to a top score of 90 points.

An ardent Christian, the young Asay gave a lot of credit to God in a conversation about his success today. “Earlier this year I wasn’t ridin’ bulls real good away from my hand and in the past couple of weeks I’ve rode a couple of good bulls away from my hand and so it felt real good. I thank God for giving me the ability to do it and for blessing me as much as he does.

“You know, it’s fun whether we win or lose. I’d do it even if there weren’t any money in it.” Despite his comment Asay is doing fine in earnings with an amazing year, moving from 30th in the 2006 ProRodeo Cowboys World Standings with earnings of $46,000, to 2nd currently, with nearly $110,000 in 2007 cash won.

I’ve heard the announcer tell some other rough stock riders; you know, get excited or do a dance or somethin’. I’m not too much into the dancin’ scene but I’ll throw my hat.”

And that’s exactly what Asay did after his big ride, tossing his hat into the grandstands as the crowd applauded. Saturday he will join 12 other finalists, the last of 25 competitive bullriders who began the Round-Up on Wednesday.

Asay was followed by Brandon Reynolds, Pike Road, Alabama, with an 85, and Sean Case, Riverside, Californian, with 82.

Despite the presence of several world rated ropers, not a single competitor in the steer roping event caught his cow today. J.R. Olson, Sheridan, Wyoming, last year’s national champion, join highly ranked J.D. Yates, Pueblo, Colorado; Rich Skelton, Llano, Texas; and Cash Myers, Athens, Texas, as well as several other skunked steer ropers.

Despite the need to coordinate their throws, team ropers fared better, with the top three teams just one-tenth of a second apart. Local favorite Matt Funk, Hermiston, Oregon, joined Bucky Campbell, Benton, City, Washington, with a winning time of 5.3 seconds in team roping, followed by Shane Durbin, Elsa, Texas, and Jed Middleton, Lubbock, Texas, at 5.4, and regional favorites, brothers Riley and Brady Minor, Ellensburg, Washington, 5.5. Riley and Brady currently rank 18th and 29th in the world standings, with $40,000 and $34,000 in 2007 winnings respectively. Funk ranks 25th with $35,000 and Campbell 27th with $35,000.

In the third roping event at the Round-Up, calf roping, known to much of the rodeo world as tie-down roping, Michael Otero, Foley Alabama, took first with a time of 11.1 seconds, followed by Clint Robinson, Spanish Fork, Utah, 12.4, and Paul Cope, Nampa, Idaho, 12.5. Otero is nationally ranked at 40th, with $28,000 in winnings, while Robinson is at 29th with $36,000. The 25-year-old Robinson placed 7th nationally in 2006 with $121,270 of his $171,108 in earnings from calf roping. He also competes in team roping and steer wrestling.

In rough stock events of the horse variety Gillette, Wyoming’s Chet Johnson, took first in the saddle bronc event with 86 points. The 26-year-old Johnson, 1999 Wyoming state saddle bronc champ in high school, is currently 15th in world standings with $54,000 in winnings. Behind him was Scott Miller, Hemet, California, who tied at 82 with Kayle Gray, Cheney Washington, and JJ Elshere, Quinn, South Dakota.

Bareback riders fared well, with five cowboys tying for the number three spot at 79. In first was Justin McDaniel, Porum, Oklahoma, with an 85, followed by Zach Curran, Arvada, Colorado, with 80. McDaniel ranks 5th in the world so far this year, with $75,000 in prize money. And tied for third were Jason Sherman, Washougal, Washington; Bo Casper, Fork Scott, Kansas; Forest Bramwell, Pagosa Springs, Colorado; Tilden Hooper, Carthage, Texas; and Jerad Schlegel, Burns, Colorado. Of all of these cowboys, only McDaniel and Curran will compete in the finals on Saturday.

Clay Cowan, Highmore, South Dakota, finished first on Friday in steer wrestling with a time of 7.2 seconds, followed by Levi Wisness, Keene, North Dakota, 7.5, and Kyle Hughes, Olney Springs, Colorado, 8.4. Despite his first place finish today, Cowan will go into Saturday’s finals tied for 10th of the 12 finals competitors. While he was an amateur, Wisness, 26, who goes into Saturday’s Round-Up finals in 5th place, won the championships for both his high school state steer wrestling title and the College World Finals.

In the rodeo’s only women’s event, barrel racing, Linzie Walker, Conway, Washington, took first with a time of 27.84, the best yet in this year’s Round-Up, beating second-place finisher Maegan Reichert, Mt. Pleasant, Texas, 28.57; and Ariel Joy Doughty, Benton City, Washington, 29.10.
