Rodeo Results for Saturday's Finals, September 15
Texas' Cash Myers wins second all-around title as
97th annual Round-Up rodeo wraps up in Pendleton
Pendleton, Oregon (September 15, 2007) The 97th annual Pendleton Round-Up finished today under warm, sunny skies, a mood that permeated the cowboys who won at the legendary rodeo, a four-day mix of rodeo and festival that brings 50,000 visitors to Pendleton each September.
Cash Myers, Athens , Texas , won the all-around cowboy award for wins in steer and calf roping events during the four days. The 27-year-old Myers is currently 4th in the ProRodeo Cowboys National Rankings for the all-around cowboy title, with over $90,000 in earnings for the year, a figure that should top $100,000 with his winnings here. Myers previously took the Round-Up’s all-around award in 2005 and was 2006 steer roping champion.
Despite his several wins, Myers noted “you only get to come here so many times—it’s a special place—and you got to try and remember them all and enjoy them all.”
Chet Johnson, Gillette, Wyoming, won Saturday’s saddle bronc competition with a phenomenal 92 point ride aboard Domino Theory and completed the achievement by winning the overall title in the event. Behind him were Jesse Kruse, Great Falls , MT , 87 points, and local favorite Ben Londo, Pendleton, 86. The 26-year-old Johnson, ranked 15 in the ProRodeo Cowboys National Rankings coming into this rodeo, will add to his $53,000 in earnings for the year.
The rodeo began on Monday with 750 contestants vying for a share of nearly $400,000 in prize money. The top 12 contestants in each event through Friday returned today to chase cash and prizes that include buckles, saddles and Pendleton Woolen mills products.
“I knew I had an awesome horse when I saw what we had drawn, exclaimed the happy Johnson. “I was pretty excited but pretty nervous too. My travel partner just had him in Puyallup and won second on one of the rounds up there so I knew he was good. To keep my nerves calm I just get on and deal with it. There’s not a lot you can do. You just kind of go with the flow I guess.
“This is a bronc rider’s dream right here. Everyone talks about Pendleton and they look forward to it all year long. You know ever since you were a little kid it’s famous all around the country so to win here, it’s something. Let ‘er buck. Praise God. I appreciate it.”
To kick off today’s rodeo cowboys threw aside their saddles and rode bareback, with Cleve Schmidt, Belle Fourche, South Dakota, capturing first in the bareback riding event aboard Painted Wagon with 86 points, just passing current number one in the world rankings, Bobby Mote of Culver, Oregon, who rode Broadway to a score of 84. Tied for third with 83 points were Jason Havens, Prineville , Oregon , and Jess Davis, Payson , Utah . In the aggregate for the four days Schmidt took first with 168 points for two rides, followed by Justin McDaniel, Porum , Oklahoma , who tied with Scott Montague, Rapid City , South Dakota , with 167 points.
In the day’s first roping event calf roper Clint Robinson, Spanish Fork, Utah, 29th in the national rankings, who set a Round-Up record in Tuesday’s slack with a time of 7.8 seconds, was left in fourth place for the four days with an aggregate of 29.4 seconds in three rides. In first place both Saturday and in the aggregate was Alwin Bouchard, Scandia , Alberta , with an 8.5 second ride today and an aggregate of 28.8. Tied for third today with 10.1 seconds were Shane Slack, Idabel, Oklahoma, and Tim Pharr, Resaca, Georgia. In the aggregate Pharr , 28.8, tied Bouchard for first while Slack, 28.9, took third.
Todd Suhn, North Platte , Nebraska , previous winner at Round-Up, took over the steer wrestling event, winning both today’s go-round as well as the aggregate, with 5.3 and 18.3 seconds respectively. The 34-year-old Suhn won the 1996 steer wrestling and all-around cowboy titles at the Round-Up and is currently ranked 5th in the world with over $71,000 in winnings, which will grow with his victories here. In the go-round he was followed in a tied second place by Clay Cowan, Highmore , South Dakota , and Levi Wisness, Keene , North Dakota , both at 6.1 seconds. Behind Suhn in the aggregate were Trevor Knowles, Mount Vernon , Oregon , 19.1, and Jason Miller, Lance Creek, Wyoming, 20.1.
Suhn made it clear that it’s not easy to win at the Round-Up with its unique and sometimes infamous grass-covered arena. He also gave credit to his horse, recognizing the role played by the animal under the cowboy, when it can contribute half the score in some events.
“Yeah, it been a long time I been trying’ to win this sucker,” said Suhn. “It’s been a long time coming but I finally won. I placed in the first round and ended up placing in the second run and in the short round here I got a great start and he just sort of put a setup between Jeff and I and I slipped right in there and just stepped him up until he come around along the head.
Asked about the grass arena, so unlike most rodeo arenas and disliked by many, Suhn said, “I think that I like it. A lot of guys don’t like and they’re just beat before they start. It’s different, with a long start, you got to cowboy a little bit plus the grass being hard you got to slide the steer out a ways and then stay up over him until they come around. It affects everybody in the bulldogging. You got to tape your ankles, tape your knees. We got a couple of guys hurt here. It’s sure something you got to watch out for and it’s not for everybody but I love it. It’s fun and I’ve won money here in the 10 to 12 years I’ve been here so it’s been great.”
In the rodeo’s only team event, Coleman Proctor, Miami , Oklahoma , and Jake Long, Nowata , Oklahoma , took first with a time of 5.9 seconds, followed by Jake Barnes, Scottsdale , Arizona , and Clay O’Brien Cooper, Morgan Mill, Texas , with a time of 6.0 seconds. In third were Charly Crawford, Prineville , Oregon , and Cody Hintz, Spring Creek , Nevada , 6.4. Over three rides Crawford and Hintz won the aggregate with a time of 18.4 seconds. Behind them, tied for second, were the Proctor- Long and Barnes-Cooper teams at 20.4.
Riding a half ton of angry pot roast is one description of the feat accomplished by the bull riders. But it’s a living. For 24-year-old Clint Craig, it really is a living. Since winning the Arkansas high school bull riding championship in 2001 and ignoring the pleas of his father, a former bull rider, to become a team roper, Craig has made riding that angry pot roast his focus and it’s paid off for the 15th world ranked rider. With his first place win at the Round-Up his lifetime earnings in his short career now amount to over a quarter million dollars and climbing.
Craig’s outstanding 92 point ride on North Star allowed him to capture the aggregate as well with 179 points in two rides. He was followed in Saturday’s go-round by Brandon Reynolds, Pike Road, Alabama , 85, who tied 21-year-old Kanin Asay, Friday’s big winner, for second. Asay’s big day Friday allowed him to take second in the bull riding aggregate with 175 points, followed by Reynolds in a tie for third with Zack Oakes, Tonasket , Washington at 170.
The most exciting moment in the steer roping event might have taken place when a dashing cow took out one of the arena photographers in what must have been an extreme close-up. Winner of the Saturday go-round was C.A. Lauer, Buffalo, Oklahoma, 17.8 seconds, followed by Randy Warnock, Maupin, Oregon, 18.5, and Rich Skelton, Llano, Texas, 19.4. Skelton’s third place finish on Saturday didn’t stop him from taking first in the aggregate, with 46.3 over three rides. Right behind him in the aggregate was Saturday’s fourth place finisher, J.D. Yates, Pueblo , Colorado , with 46.4, and Lauer in third with 51.6.
Finally, in the rodeo’s only women’s event, Linzie M. Walker, Conway , Washington , won the barrel racing event with a time of 27.64 seconds, beating her own best time on Friday, when she also took first. Right behind her was Terri Kaye Kirkland, Billings , Montana , 28.08, and Maegan Reichert, Mt. Pleasant , Texas , 28.22. Because of the Round-Up’s grass arena, the barrel racers turn their horses in the less slippery dirt track that edges the grass before dashing across the long stretch of grass, requiring the longest, most grueling barrel racing course in the sport. The same three women captured the same places in the aggregate with Walker at 55.48 seconds in two runs, Kirkland at 56.73, and Reichert, 56.79.
